Great Backyard Bird Count

This weekend, February 14-15-16-17, we have the opportunity to dovetail with another long-running citizen-science program, the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC). Enter your sightings through the eBird portal as well as into iNaturalist - http://gbbc.birdcount.org/. The GBBC provides a continent-wide late-winter snapshot of bird populations.

Sequoia Audubon has two field trips scheduled in the county for this weekend. For all the details, check the website here - http://www.sequoia-audubon.org/fieldtrips.html

Friday, February 14, Donald Pendleton will lead three mini-trips across the day, starting at Pillar Point Harbor in Half Moon Bay at 9:00 am.

Saturday, February 15 - Garth Harwood and Jennifer Rycenga will co-lead a sea-watch trip at Pigeon Point south of Pescadero along SR1. Meet at the observation platform beyond the lighthouse at 8:00 am, or drop by anytime between 8:00 am and noon, and help us look for seabirds, Marbled Murrelets, rocky sandpipers, and more! This is a rare opportunity for beginners to learn some of the basics of sea-watching. Please bring a scope if you have one!

These are all free and open to naturalists of all ages and abilities.

Lake Merritt Bio-Blitz

Yesterday was the Lake Merritt Bio-Blitz. This is the fifth Bay Area Bio-Blitz, and the fourth in which I've participated (Fort Funston, Laurelwood, Palo Alto Baylands, Lake Merritt; I missed the first one, at McLaren Park). In some ways this was the most successful so far. Over a hundred participants, plus we were getting people to participate on*the*spot! Press coverage from multiple sources, too, including my student Cody who was covering the story. The diversity of the people participating was breathtaking, too: more children than ever, more first-time naturalists than ever before. The special events - drones, mud critters, pollinator garden, Tufted Duck - really gave a special flavor to the day. Loved every minute of it, even though I added very few new species for myself. It was great to be with Peggy (tui), Donna (dpom), Ore (ore), Ken-ichi (kueda), Dan, Cynthia (seakangaroo), Liam (robberfly), Amber, Marissa, Rebecca, Alison (kestrel), Prakrit, Matt, Sam, Mark, Judith and more friends old and new through the day, including Matt and his wife and their baby Bella who, at three months, is the youngest person I've iNat-ted with.
