Misadventures at Hornsby Bend

Want to know what wacky stuff happened Saturday 3/11/2023, my first week of spring break? Why did I decide to walk 2 hours to Hornsby Bend? What did I eat for breakfast that day?

Scene of Metro Bus 271 barreling past me and the stop I was supposed to be at.

The answer to that last question is a quick grab-and-go wrap I snagged from Littlefield Patio Cafe, but you can get that and more in this new blog post I wrote:

This a BIG THANK YOU to all who were with me 3/11-3/12 in Austin (Hornby Bend(ish), Southwest Metropolitan Park, BCNWR) - I dedicate this blog post to all of you who helped make that the best weekend of 2023 yet. If I had to, I would walk all the way to Hornsby Bend again to attend another iNatter outing in Austin with y'all :)

It's a detailed account of my misadventures to Hornsby Bend, in case any of you are interested in the melodramatic details. Roadside botany, to the max. I churned this out rather quickly (if you call more than 10 hours quick), so feel free to point out any typos and I can correct them. Hope you enjoy!

(Also: I counted up the number of lifer plants between 3/8 [when I first saw the Aristolochia erecta] and 3/12 [last major field excursion over college spring break]. More than 30 new plants within that timespan. It felt like the first half of spring break was just one very long bioblitz. And I only just finished uploading all those observations today...)

Arnan, I enjoyed crossing paths again. Your expanded blog post is good read. Entertaining and educational. - Blake

I can say the same for you, Blake. Thanks for being generous and for offering a ride that day. I hope our paths will cross again. -Arnan

What a fun read! It reminded me of my many adventures during grad school days when I lived north of Hyde Park (near 49th Street) and would frequently walk to campus via the Intramural Field (great birding!) down Speedway or Duval or most often a less traveled avenue. Sometimes I was lazy enough to ride the Shuttle Bus, but if I had time, I preferred the walk!

Arnan, I'm sure we'll have more adventures in the future.

Thanks Chuck - It's only been freshman year, and I've already had quite a few college adventures! I really should find time to walk around Austin more, I've mostly constrained myself to UT campus and Shoal Creek. Haven't even taken advantage of my free admission to the Wildflower Center yet! I can only imagine what adverntures you got into while you were here, and would love to hear some of those stories. -Arnan
