Some sort of fly on surface of water of a shallow (1-2") puddle a few feet in diameter next to the trail.
These flowers were starting to open.The others I saw in the park had not opened yet.
We aren't used to seeing the birds facing directly toward us. So this presents an interesting identification challenge. The second photo gives a better side view of the face, but INat's funky AI comes up with a first suggestion on it of a Chat, hardly unlikely in February at Brasos Bend. Common Yellowthroats on the other hadare to be expected and I saw a handful of them in the 5 hours I was there.
