This wasp spent at least ten minutes tearing into the disc florets of a blanket flower cultivar. It would tear out pieces from the center, stick its head in, continue, move over to the side, come back. I was unable to photograph it catching anything. After it left, I picked and disassembled the flower. It contained what appeared to be moth larva. See observation https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/83058958.

In a higher quality Northern Flatwoods

This plant was mixed among plants that fit V. cucullata as described in this observation, although part of a separate subpopulation:

https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/45053704

The majority of nearby violets had consistent characteristics. And this plant would have been essentially indistinguishable from the nearby violets if not for the pubescent leaf undersides, petioles, and peduncles. The adaxial surfaces of the leaves were also slightly harrier than the nearby plants that I believe to be V. cucullata.

The conservative, hairy form of V. sororia is present in mesic to wet-mesic sections of the site. And the plant in this observation may show evidence of introgression with this form of V. sororia. However, this plant had shorter pubescence on the leaves, and much shorter pubescence on the peduncles than in woodland V. sororia. And the sepals were eciliate, unlike in woodland V. sororia. The leaf shape and size, and long peduncles also fit V. cucullata better. The fourth picture shows a leaf from a nearby typical V. cucullata on the right next to a leave of the atypical, hairy plant illustrated in this observation.

Descrição

In a dry upland area, growing in railroad ballast.

These plants were perhaps consistently smaller than the typical V. sororia found in the surrounding floodplains:

https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/45051158

The peduncles may also be comparatively longer, with flowers consistently held well above the level of the leaves. Additionally, the peduncles were consistently fully glabrous, while the leaves were consistently strigose adaxially and obtuse to acute-tipped.

The dominant morphology of the V. sororia in nearby floodplains was very similar to the plants in this observation, but with leaves glabrous adaxially and leaves larger and with more rounded leaf tips. The peduncles of the dominant form of the floodplains were also relatively shorter and hairier on the distal portions.

The plants illustrated here, growing in railroad ballast, were not far from multiple subpopulations of stemless blue violets that may fit V. cucullata, and they possessed a few traits in common with those plants:

https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/45051215

In particular, the long glabrous peduncles, relatively acute leaf tips, and strigose adaxial leaf surfaces suggest some amount of introgression with V. cucullata or a similar entity. The smaller size of the plants growing in ballast may be due to harsher environmental conditions. The characteristics of this violet subpopulation may support the hypothesis that violets are more likely to hybridize under conditions of disturbance.

Descrição

In a Northern Flatwoods with somewhat sandy, calcareous soils. Adjacent to a section of wet prairie/marsh and a section of woodland that remains flooded into the early part of summer if not longer.

While the beard hairs of these violets aren't very short, as is usually stated for V. cucullata, they are moderately but distinctly clavate. The leaf shape, varying from reniform to deltate-ovate fits this species well. Although, the leaf shape is perhaps within the realm of variation for V. affinis.

I initially didn't post these pictures because I had seen plants nearby that I had interpreted as V. affinis, based on their bearded spur petals:

https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/19507008

The plants in this observation, being part of the same population as the plants in the above observation, lack beards on their spur petals. Other plants in this population showed obvious influence from V. sororia:

https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/18837580

So I interpreted the plants in this observation as part of a hybrid swarm expressing various characteristics of V. affinis and V. sororia.

But I didn't notice that these violets that lacked a beard on the spur petal also seem to have well developed sepal auricles. I also didn't notice that all the plants in this population have beard hairs that are distinctly clavate. I will have to reexamine the plants in this population soon, since I now wonder if the variations in this population may be better explained by hybridization between V. sororia and V. cucullata. Although, I suspect that V. sororia, V. affinis, and V. cucullata have all contributed to this hybrid swarm.
