Descrição

little sporodochial anamorph on a twich of Populus sp. (probably).

Sporodochia up to 0.5 mm wide, effuse or even cupulate, vivid yellow, gelatinous when hydrated.

Conidiophore arise from a darkly pigmented basal stroma, conidiophore branched, somewhat phiallidic. Conidiogenesis unclear, conidia produced apicaly from elongated +- phialide like conidiogenous cells, might also produce a short bowl shaped collarette, but this is somewhat unclear.

Conidia smooth, globose 1.7-2.2

This organism seem to be quite similar to other collection using this name on the web. as I understand, the genus Dendrodochium is considered synonymous with Clonostachys. However, I do not believe this specific species is congeneric with Clonostachys, but as far as I know, it have not been studied recently, and its relationship with other species is unknown

Unfortunately I have no in situ photographs. These were found in leaf litter in Beech/Hemlock woods. The largest fruiting body is 5.5cm tall, the head is 2cm tall and 1cm wide. The smaller fruiting bodies are about 4cm tall. Both the head and the stem feature black velvety hairs.

A spore drop produced mostly aseptate, light brown, guttulate spores. Spores in ascus were darker brown and usually 3-5 septate, 57-72 x 4.8-6µm, Q=11.8.

Asci around 170-180 x 14-16µm.

Paraphyses sometimes curled, not very or perhaps occasionally swollen at the tips, sparsely septate.

Descrição

Under mixed hardwood forests, mostly oak and beech.

On some sort of acorn, not sure which. I looked in the Champions du Suisse Tome 1 for these, and nothing really jumped out at me. I’ll take a look at spores and ascis later, and try and find better Asco sources for central Europe.

Adding some micro-details:

The micro-shot is of asci at 400x in Meltzer’s. The asci are 8-spored, and have slight blue reaction in the tip. The spores are curved, smooth, about 15 × 4 um in size. The paraphases are thin, with blunt ends.

The microscopic details match well with the descriptions of Rutstroemia echinophila from Champions du Suisse Tome 1. Except that species is supposed to be on chestnut husks. But since nothing else matched well, I go with the fact that also goes for acorns at times.

This anamorph is easy to recognize because it produce flattened conidiomata with a reddish base and the conidia are produced inside the beak.

Conidia are produced singly and terminally at the end of long slender conidiogenous cells. The conidia are smooth hyaline aseptate, fusiform and measuring 5.5-7 X 2-3u.

I think that there are not any real look alike with those characteristics. While this fungi ressemble an Hyphomycetes it is not considered one.

This pretty anamorph can be found on rotten fungi. in this case, Picipes badius.

This is not an Hyphomycetes, as the conidia are producing inside the neck which is composed of stromatic tissue.

The conidia are very distinctive by having two appendage, one longer than the other.

in this case the longest appendage measured up to 7u and the shortest appendage measured up to 4u. the condia itself measure 5-7 X 2-2.5u

The asci have 8 spores and the spores are filiform measuring 60-75u X 2.5-3u. with a very faint gelatinous sheet and no obvious septa.

The paraphyse tend to be hooked and are somewhat clavate at the apex.

By the long spores and the clavate paraphyse I think this is more likely to be C. coronatus and not C. dentata found on the same host with smaller spore and with non-clavate paraphyse

a very distinctive hyphomycetes forming sporodochia. the Conidia are massive reaching up to 200u-30u and 4 septate at maturity. I don't think any other local species have conidia with 4 septae.

Bactridium subglandis from Japan and Russia also have conidia with 4 sepate, but they are even longer (up to nearly 300u).

Locally a few other Yellow Bactridium are known, Bactridium ellisii have Conidia with 2-3 septae, Bactridium claviforme have conidia with up to 12 septae.

This species is sometime found in fall here, usually in very wet habitat or near creeks.
