At least one male observed at the same time but did not settle allowing a photograph. Keys to U. aliena/Macrodiplax cora couplet in Theischinger & Endersby (2009) and dark hind wing markings eliminate M. cora.

Eusynthemis nigra subspecies nigra. There is a fairly close match with the wing venation scan on Wikipedia but not perfect.

I looked at Mount Lewis Tigertail and Rainforest Tigertail and the wing venation was close for Rainforest Tigertail but not a match for Mount Lewis Tigertail. The problem is there is not a photo I can find that might help.

this sp. looks best fitting- found in long grass near to where Black knights were until recently found. Wasn't at all shy, in fact flew to within several meters to me. Seems to change faces, pics 2 &3.

saw this female flutter into a bush, thought it was an unusually small Sapphire but had the characteristic Jewel like flight pattern. She flew down into the base of water grasses and started laying eggs before disappearing into thicker grass (last pic shows the area)

saw this pair yesterday when it was too wet to take a camera so returned today finding them at the same dead branch side of the creek. Thought they looked like a slim striped swampdragon minus the stripe, perhaps juvenile but these pics tell a different story. They appear inseparable and only fly small circuits around this branch. One has a yellow line under the abdomens length - seen yesterday while it was hanging upside down.
