Descrição

Photo 1) Galls found on underside of a White Oak leaflet, all growing on or slightly aside of a lateral vein. Subglobular and glabrous. The ensuing discussion will focus on just the larger of the two. 2) Closeup showing fine reddish spots against tan background, giving a pinkish appearance from afar. Max diameter 4.5 mm. 3) I took a cross-sectional slice off the top of the gall, exposing a fleshy, watery interior similar to a plum. In doing so, the gall became separated from the leaf vein. 4) After more slices I finally reached a sole chamber with a whitish, ribbed larva inside. It remained in a tucked position the entire time that I observed it, so it was difficult to get a good measurement. I estimated the larva to be about 1 mm wide and about 2 mm long, a rather plump specimen. Under a microscope I could not see any legs, but I did make out a bizarre fish-like mouth with two mandibles (?) that were dark, curved, and sharp-pointed. Wish I could have got photos of the mouth. It was creepy yet awesome looking!

This leaf came from the same tree as https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/101723025.

Hello! While shopping for plants I spotted a large lizard who seemed out of place. I notified store employees but they said this lizard was unfamiliar. I followed her around for quite a while observing her behavior. She seemed to be healthy, active, and eating (bugs?) as she trotted around the area. She’s fast! Before I knew it she was gone. I’m sure she was still there but I could not find her, being surrounded by plants. She was maybe 12" long and like 1.5" wide. Her head had what appeared to be turquoise markings. After returning home I googled and found Travis Laduc with UT Austin who pointed me in your direction to share my sighting. (Thanks, Travis!) I’m sorry that my pictures/video are not very clear but this was so unexpected. I’m happy to answer any questions. I have a video but can’t figure out how to upload here.

Although some publications refer to the virus in this observation as Japanese Holly Fern Mosaic Virus or Japanese Holly Fern Mottle Virus, @jameskdouch reports that its correct name is Japanese holly fern mottle pteridovirus. See Rodrigo A. Valverde and Sead Sabanadzovic, "A novel plant virus with unique properties infecting Japanese holly fern," Journal of General Virology (2009), 90, 2542–2549 (https://www.researchgate.net/publication/233739268_A_Strain_of_Japanese_holly_fern_mottle_virus_Infecting_Leatherleaf_Fern_in_the_United_States).
For a brief overview of this virus, written for the general public, see Rodrigo A. Descrição

Both subsp. americanus (native to North America) and subsp. australis (introduced to North America) are found at this site, sometimes growing intermixed. In the photos the former is indicated with an “N” and the latter with an “I”. On the date I visited this site, 16 September 2019, these are the differences I observed with living stems between the two subspecies:

•Relative stem height: subsp. americanus usually shorter, subsp. australis usually taller.
•Relative stem spacing: subsp. americanus usually more dispersed, subsp. australis usually denser (rarely solitary).
•Stem breaking: subsp. americanus fibrous and hard to break off, subsp. australis often breaks off easily.
•Stem color (lower/older internodes): subsp. americanus red and often shiny, subsp. australis yellow-green and not shiny.
•Stem texture (lower/older internodes): subsp. americanus smooth, subsp. australis minutely ridged.
•Stem & leaf sheath dots: subsp. americanus often present, subsp. australis absent.
•Leaf condition: subsp. americanus has lots of senescence, subsp. australis generally are healthy.
•Margins of upper leaves near panicle: subsp. americanus finely serrated, subsp. australis coarsely serrated.
•Sterile stems more abundant than fertile: subsp. americanus yes, subsp. australis no.
•Panicle branches for panicles of similar length: subsp. americanus fewer, subsp. australis more.
•Panicle branch spacing: subsp. americanus farther, subsp. australis closer.
•Flowering status: subsp. americanus finished flowering, subsp. australis flowering.

There probably are other characteristics I overlooked that distinguish these two subspecies from each other. Perhaps these characteristics listed above hold up at other sites in North America. I don’t use leaf color to tell them apart because although some clones of subsp. australis are strongly blue-green, some clones of that subspecies are more green or yellow-green. See this observation for an illustration: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/30610594

Descrição

NOTE: I am leaving this in the "Leaf Diseases" project because this looks like a leaf disease even though it is not a disease.

...................................

At first I thought this fallen leaf was showing black spots because of to a leaf spot fungal disease, however this helpful site:

https://ag.purdue.edu/btny/ppdl/Pages/WH_old/hot07/7-24.html

when talking about Tulip Tree Leaf premature yellowing and leaf drop said that those are (my emphasis):

"...symptoms most likely related to root stress. Previous extended periods of hot, dry, weather in combination with various site stress factors, are likely contributing factors. An added symptom that frequently accompanies the leaf yellowing is the appearance of circular, black spots between the veins of the yellowing leaves. The black spots are often mistaken for a fungal leaf spot disease. Though alarming in appearance these symptoms do not usually affect long-term tree vigor or health."
