Oh boy, here's another trip down the Syrphini rabbit hole. I think. Here's where I am at:

Antenna aren't black, so it's not E. grossulariae. Abdominal markings aren't quite right for M. laxus, and wing venation curvature doesn't match anyway. Lacking the black abdominal margin for E. fumipennis.

It COULD be S. rubesii, especially with the yellow hind leg, but the stripes don't look quite right. That species is noted as "difficult to identify from photos," though...

An example of Myrmecophily
The butterfly Plebejus argus larva developed in the Lasius niger anthill, secreting substances that ants really like. This is a very young butterfly, her wings are not yet fully spread, and so far she cannot fly away. But probably, she also secretes a substance pleasant to the ants, and the ants, taking this opportunity, lick it.

Kudos to @ivanparr for choosing a great spot for these. We found them exclusively on the undersides of rather rotten hardwood logs and branches (mostly of Umbellularia californica), generally on shoulders above the creek where there was ample soil moisture. They were ~1.5 mm long (photo with the green ruler has mm as the minor lines), a bit more purple-toned than Megacina cockerelli, and considerably less active and prone to run away than that species. They would remain in that "leg cage" posture for many, many minutes before deciding to relocate. Juveniles seemed much more active than the adults.

This is actually the undescribed species near sericea described by Bullington in his unpublished 1986 thesis. It is given a manuscript name there but the name doesn't meet ICZN criteria for publication. It differs from sericea by the more strongly-arched shelf of the hypandrium, and by the unforked mesal process.

Both this year and last year from late March through early April I have found these drifting through the water column in a small tributary draining from a sedge/cattail marsh through alder swamp and into the larger stream. Water temp was 38 degrees F. ID very uncertain, but has 6 tiny legs near the distinct head, and then also at least three pairs of leg-like appendages down the body (see later photos). A larvae, perhaps of a Diptera?

150,000 IDs. Yay!
He's a little chunky at the moment because it's winter and I let him eat a little extra to keep warm. Don't worry, he'll be slim again when it's warm.

Also, half his volume is pure fur. See photo #2.

He's a very good, very fluffy boy. This is his first experience with below-freezing temperatures and his coping mechanisms include seeking warm cuddles. :)

Kleinmond coccinea shelter reared

9 April 2019:

Collected large frass-n-silk shelter on Erica coccinea.

26 May 2019:

It turns out that there are at least two individuals sharing this shelter.

18 June 2019:

I noticed that there was a concentration of nest material below the shelter in the tub, firmly attached to the tissue paper lining. On further inspection I found a cocoon in there.

31 July 2019:

The first of my two inhabitants emerged. Cocoon #2 is still on the shelf.

Kleinmond imbricata crowd currently being reared

21 April 2019:

Collected a very ordinary looking shelter made with frass and silk on Erica imbricata. I noticed the usual couple of ants patrolling the twig, they often appear on my food plant collections. But then, while I was prodding the little nest to see if I could make the cat come out, I discovered a whole lot of the ants also living in the shelter. The weird thing is that the caterpillar seems absolutely fine. I've never seen this before! I hope to keep the whole lot alive and see what happens.
